"3 day rule." Mitch exclaimed, "Don't call her for 3 days."
That was two days ago. I had to agree with him though. I didn't want to come across too keen and scare her away early. I'm sure I'll manage to somehow do that later anyway so best to delay the affects for as long as possible.
Now the third day had arrived and I was feeling nervous again. I want to ask her to dinner this Friday night, but what if I call her and she doesn't answer? What if she says no, or isn't available on Friday? What if 3 days isn't long enough?
"Just call her already." Michael instructs me. He, Josh and I had gone over to Mitches place after lunch on Boxing Day to hang in his apartment and I'd been nervously hovering my thumb over the call button on my mobile with her phone number entered and ready to go for way too long.
"Alright, fine. I'm calling." I press the button, stand up and head to the balcony.
It rings. And rings. And rings... until finally it rings out. No answer.
"No answer." I say, deflated. The guys laugh at me and start making jokes that she gave me the wrong number.
The next hour at Mitches feels like an eternity, hoping she calls me back. Wondering when would be appropriate to try and call again.
The guys play a video game and I try to focus on it to forget about the call, telling myself to relax. She wouldn't have wasted her night on Sunday with me if she wasn't interested.
I finally forget, if not but for a moment and my phone rings. It's her!
"Ok", I say to myself. "Be cool."
I answer the phone: "Hey."
"Hi," she says. "Sorry I couldn't get the phone before. We had family over."
"No worries." I say as if I hadn't been absolutely dying for her to call me back.
"How's it going? Did you have a nice Christmas?" I ask.
"Yeah it was good. How about you?" Yeah it was good. We just have family over for lunch and then a quiet afternoon." I say.
"Cool. Yeah we also visit family on Christmas." She replies.
I decide to cut to the chase.
"So, I was wondering if maybe you'd like to go out to dinner with me on Friday night?" I ask. Finally, the moment of truth was upon me.
"Yeah, that sounds nice." She replies with a chirp in her voice.
I am both relieved and excited.
"Ok, cool. Well I was thinking maybe Marco's in town? I'll see if I can get a reservation and let you know. Should we say around seven?" I ask.
"Yep, 7 o'clock works. Sounds good." She says.
"Ok well how about I pick you up around quarter to seven then?" I say.
"Sounds great." She says.
I conclude the call. "Ok I'll see you then."
I hang up and inform the guys of the most exciting news. I've got some planning to do.
